Adam Grabowski

Points of Light Number:
6004
Vacaville, CA

Adam Grabowski may just be 17 years old, but the junior at Vacaville Christian Schools in Vacaville, California has already spent eight years helping other young people succeed. Grabowski, who says his parents raised him to be oriented towards community service, started volunteering at The Leaven when he was in the sixth grade, first helping out with the soccer camp and now he’s in a leadership position.

The Leaven works in partnership with members of the local community, including businesses, schools and church groups to bring after-school mentoring and tutoring programs to struggling neighborhoods where drop-out rates are out of control and gangs threaten the peace of the community.

Although Grabowski works on literacy skills with 15 at-risk kids from five to 12 years old, the nuts and bolts of helping kids with school work is only part of his mission.

“It’s really about bringing hope and friendship to these kids,” he said. “We have a sense of family, of continuity with them. Many of these kids come from difficult families, sometimes even histories that include abuse and not getting enough to eat. The Leaven feeds them and provides a lot of encouragement and mentoring.”

In 2015 Grabowski had the idea of working with his high school varsity basketball team to start a basketball camp for the kids when he got into high school. The majority of his group live in the Groves apartment complex. When he showed up, the basketball hoop had been taken down and the kids had nowhere to play.

“That really made me sad – but I knew we could fix the problem and move forward.” He got a truck and brought in his own portable hoop to that the six-week camp could go ahead. Although the sport is central to the camp, being present, helping the kids work out conflict, show an example of leadership and encouragement; those are the real takeaways for the children. Besides volunteering on the weekends for events and during the camps, Grabowski has motivated his teenage friends to volunteer and have fun as they serve others.

Destino

The short animated film “Destino” was a historic collaboration between Walt Disney and Jennifer Meyer Open Heart 18karat Gold Ring GggotsDAQu
. The graphic works that have been produced from the film, as well as the film’s original storyboards and paintings, are enthusiastically collected by art and film fans around the world.

Walt Disney and Salvador Dalí started talking at a party one night in 1945 at Jack Warner’s house (of Warner Brothers Studio). Each had respected the other’s surrealist work (for Dalí thought of Disney as a surrealist) and decided to create a short film together. Disney had been increasingly interested in collaborations with great artists because he felt, “Like the ‘Night on Bald Mountain’ sequence Kay Nielson designed for ‘Fantasia,’ I want to give more big artists such opportunities. We need them. We have to keep breaking new trails.”

Dalí began work on the collaborative animation short, “Destino,” in 1946 and created 22 paintings and over 135 storyboards, drawings, and sketches. Dalí thought “Destino” was “a magical exposition on the problem of life in the labyrinth of time.” The project was shelved after just eight months due to low funds and the anticipated inability to market “Destino” after World War II.

While working on the animated feature “Fantasia 2000,” Roy E. Disney, nephew of Walt, Vice Chairman of The Walt Disney Company, and Director of Animation at the time, decided to complete the overdue “Destino” project. A team of twenty-five artists in the Paris-based Disney animation studio worked under the direction of Dominique Monfery to fulfill the Dalí-Disney dream.

“Destino,” completed, is six minutes and 40 seconds long, set to Armando Dominguez’s dreamy Mexican ballad of the same name (to which Disney owned the rights and recruited Dalí to visualize on film). It was released on June 2, 2003 at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

“Destino” is a harmonious blend of evocative Dalí imagery and flawless Disney animation. Monfery stayed true to the 2-D style of animation used in the 1940s and was devoted to carrying out both Dali’s and Disney’s vision for the animation short.

“Destino” has received the following accolades:

•Oscar nomination for Best Short Film, Animated (Academy Awards, 2004) • Annie Award Nomination for Outstanding Achievement in an Animated Short (ASIFA-Hollywood, 2004) • Winner of Special Citation for Restoration (Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, 2004) • Winner of Certificate of Merit (Chicago International Film Festival, 2003) • Winner of Grand Prix for Dominique Monfery, Director (Melbourne International Film Festival, 2003) • Winner of Grand Prize for Best Animated Short (Rhode Island International Film Festival, 2003)

The six story-high Building 1, the tallest on the Seta Campus, has laboratories with state of the art equipment and offices for professors and administrative staff of the Faculty of Science and Technology. It also accommodates the Career Development Center to support students and the Media Information Center. In front of the building, is a fountain where you can find goldfish released by students.

The Jyushinkan Chapel, a semi-Western style building, was originally constructed as the Minami Police Station in Osaka. It was donated to Nishi-Hongwanji in 1908 and was relocated to the Seta Campus in 1998. Used as a worship facility now, it is occasionally used for wedding ceremonies too. The open space in front of the Jyushinkan, near the events stage, is a gathering place for students.

This library holds a well-balanced collection of 340,000 books on natural, social and human sciences. In particular, it has an impressive number of foreign monographs and research materials. The library has excellent self-study facilities for students including small rooms for individual or group research and discussion, Internet access, audio-visual materials and facilities.

This multipurpose indoor training dome means students can have physical education classes, or hold extracurricular activities and special events, regardless of the weather. The interior is as large as the infield area of a baseball field, three tennis courts or two futsal courts.

The Student Association Hall was built as “a place where students can do what they want”. Its three floors (two above and one below ground) house an exhibition gallery, meeting rooms, and an event auditorium. The basement floor becomes the stage and the stairs leading towards the upper floors the audience seats when special events are held.

The Chikokan was built to accommodate the Afrasian Center for Peace and Development, which was founded as a part of the Government’s “Basic plan for promotion of research institutes at private universities” to contribute to the development of international society. On the first floor, there are a Co-op store selling a wide range of products ranging from food to stationery, a travel agency and a bookstore.

The Seihokan, with its shiny green roof, was built in April 2005 and is used as the base for student sports and culture clubs. The first floor has lockers and shower rooms and the second floor a practice studio that can accommodate up to 100 members of the university’s top-ranking brass band club.

The first floor has a cafeteria offering a variety of dishes which students can enjoy outside on the terrace on fine days. There is also a bakery serving fresh bread and a convenience store on the same floor. The second floor has a cafe-style restaurant where you can enjoy pasta and curried rice.

This hall, built to enable collaboration between local industries and the University, has a variety of facilities such as joint research rooms, laboratories, exhibition rooms, meeting rooms, a small auditorium, a party room, etc. Many local residents make use of a diverse array of extension courses offered or attend meetings, presentations and exhibitions in the hall. Companies and other groups use it for research meetings or as a place for communication.

Adjacent to the Lake Biwako Cultural Park and surrounded by rich forests, the Seta Campus was established in 1989 as one of the projects planned to coincide with the 350th anniversary of the foundation of Ryukoku University.

To realize the goal of creating “interdisciplinary faculties open to local communities”, being promoted by the government at the time, Ryukoku University established the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Sociology in Seta and became the first comprehensive university founded by a Buddhist organization in Japan to have faculties covering both the sciences and humanities. Later, the Faculty of Intercultural Communication as well as the Ryukoku Extension Center (REC) were established, to contribute both to the world and the local community respectively.

*REC is the base for collaboration between the University and local industries. It provides local people with opportunities to take open courses on campus and allows small businesses and venture companies to develop new technologies and promote their research activities.
